Experts discuss “Copyright Enforcement in the Online World” at a high level event at the Council of Europe, with the participation of Andrus Ansip, Vice President of the European Commission & EU Commissioner for the Digital Single Market

On Tuesday, 22nd November 2016, the Centre for International Intellectual Property Studies (CEIPI) of the University of Strasbourg had the honour of organizing, jointly with the European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe, a half-day conference in the Council of Europe, Strasbourg, on the topic of “Copyright Enforcement in the Online World”. The conference was held in the context of the 11thedition of the “Rendez-vous européens de Strasbourg” by the Pôle européen d’administration publique (PEAP) in Strasbourg (22-26 November 2016).

During this event, Mr Andrus Ansip, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for the Single Digital Market, addressed the issue from the perspective of the ongoing copyright reform in the EU.

The other high level speakers included: Mr Pavel Svoboda, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI); Ms Julia Reda, Member of the European Parliament; Mr Robert Spano, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, Council of Europe; Mr Christophe Geiger, Professor of Law, Director General and Director of the Research Department of the CEIPI; Ms Susanne Nikoltchev, Executive Director of the European Audiovisual Observatory; and many other distinguished representatives from the Council of Europe, academia, industry and media dealing with copyright online.

Among the topics debated during this conference were the policies and mechanisms of digital copyright enforcement, an ongoing EU copyright reform and its implications for copyright enforcement on the Internet, and the impact of the currently prioritized enforcement strategies on online intermediaries and human rights.
