[Creative Commons Press Release, Link, (CC-BY) ] The Creative Commons Global Summit will be held from August 21 to 24 at the San Martín Cultural Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event will bring together activists and academics from 100 countries to discuss the present and future of the international free culture movement.
Creative Commons (CC) is a globally-focused nonprofit organization dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. CC provides free licenses and other legal tools to give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions and get credit for their creative work while allowing others to copy, distribute and make specific uses of it.
The Global Summit brings together the community of experts, academics, and activists who comprise the Creative Commons affiliate network in a different country every two years. Representatives of affiliated institutions will be present in Buenos Aires, with the support and organization of the locally based Fundación Vía Libre and Wikimedia Argentina.
The summit agenda includes more than 60 sessions and panel presentations on topics such as copyright reform; CC licenses in educational, cultural, and artistic projects; relationships with governments, academia, and civil society; and the development of business models with an open and collaborative structure.
Creative Commons co-founder Lawrence Lessig will give a keynote address at the summit. Lessig is well recognized worldwide both for his work with Creative Commons and as a government reform advocate. Other notable summit attendees include Creative Commons CEO Cathy Casserly and intellectual property expert Michael W Carroll.
Attendance at the Creative Commons Summit is free, although registration is required. For more information, please visit www.creativecommons.org
