Media briefing to precede official start of the Global Congress on Intellectual Property and the Public Interest

Experts and advocates working on international intellectual property (IP) issues, including the EU’s consideration of ACTA and U.S. involvement in the Trans Pacific Partnership negotiations, will join American University’s Washington College of law for the inaugural Global Congress on Public Interest Intellectual Property Aug. 25-27, 2011.
The IP practitioners, academics, and public officials from around the globe will participate in an open press briefing prior to the official start of the Congress at 10 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2011. The unique briefing will cover the release of two draft reports commissioned by the EU Parliament Green Party on ACTA and the public interest, and an analysis of the Trans Pacific Partnership’s IP and pharmaceutical chapters before upcoming negotiations in Chicago.

Global Congress will serve as a site for sharing research, ideas, and policy proposals for how international IP law can better protect global public interest concerns. The Global Congress will take recent research and advocacy interventions, such as the recently released Media Piracy in Emerging Economies report, as a starting point for discussion.
“This meeting of the Global Congress is a pivotal part of shifting the tone of the IP rights debate,” says Sean Flynn, associate director of American University Washington College of Law’s Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property. “Over time, we hope to bring the focus of the issue back to access to knowledge goods and the free flow of innovation among creators and consumers.”
The Global Congress is co-hosted by the law school’s Program on Information Justice and Intellectual Property, Fundação Getulio Vargas’s Center for Technology and Society (Brazil), the American Assembly at Columbia University, the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (Geneva), and the Institute for Global and International Studies at George Washington University.
