Creative Commons held a one-day workshop before kickstarting the CC Global Summit 2023 in Mexico City. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss issues related to Artificial Intelligence, creators, and the commons, and to help Creative Commons and the global community navigate the emerging issues in the face of generative AI and its impact on the commons. CC formulated seven key principles for regulating generative AI models in order to protect the interests of various stakeholders such as creators, people building on the commons, and society. These principles emphasize the importance of permitting the use of copyright protected works for training purposes in the context of generative AI systems for non-commercial public interest works, and collaborative efforts to ensure creator and rightsholder preferences regarding AI training. These principles emerge from the recognition that the extraction of value from the commons for the purposes of AI training may raise many questions which would require a host of considerations.
