Carolina Botero’s recent paper, “Latin American AI Strategies Can Tackle Copyright as a Legal Risk for Researchers,” addresses the legal issues that researchers face when trying to use or develop artificial intelligence (AI) for research purposes. The paper highlights the challenges faced by researchers in Latin America who use text and data mining (TDM) as a tool for advancement amidst stringent copyright laws that do not accommodate their AI-driven research & research methods. Botero proposes that Latin American countries revise their IP laws to include exceptions for TDM, aligning national policies with international human rights standards and allowing research and innovation to thrive without legal hindrances. She argues that balancing innovation with the fundamental right to research will improve the global competitive stance of these nations in the digital era.
